Cookie policy
This policy explains which cookies and similar technologies CrabChain.org uses, what they are for, who manages them and how you can accept, reject or delete them. It applies to every page of crabchain.org.
Website owner
CrabChain.org belongs to Kilian O'Brien Prats, a private individual, who runs it as a personal project to explain cryptocurrencies and digital assets. CrabChain is the name of the project and the website, not of a company or any other entity. For any question about this policy you can write to crabchainorg@gmail.com.
What cookies and similar technologies are
Cookies are small files that a website stores in your browser and that the browser sends back to the site on each visit. Similar technologies, such as the browser's local storage (localStorage and sessionStorage), also store information on your device, but do not send it to any server on their own. What is stored in localStorage stays until you delete it, and what is stored in sessionStorage is deleted when you close the tab.
Article 22.2 of Spanish Law 34/2002 on information society services and electronic commerce (LSSI) applies to both, because it covers any way of storing or reading information on your device. When personal data are processed, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and Spanish Organic Law 3/2018 on data protection (LOPDGDD) also apply. This policy follows the criteria of the guide on the use of cookies of the Spanish Data Protection Agency (AEPD), which is in Spanish.
Technical and preference storage
The only data of its own that CrabChain.org stores in your browser are these three preferences, and the website sets no cookies of its own. The texts, images, fonts and scripts of the website are served from crabchain.org, except the Google AdSense and Google Tag Manager code, which is loaded from Google's servers and is explained in the sections on advertising and analytics cookies, and the Cloudflare Web Analytics code, a statistics service that stores no cookies or other data in your browser.
| Name | What it stores, when and for how long |
|---|---|
| preferredLanguage | The code of the language you choose in the language menu, for example «en». It is only stored when you choose a language in that menu, and it is used to open the website in that language on your next visits. It stays in localStorage until you delete it. |
| sidebarClosed | «true» or «false», depending on whether you close or open the side menu of guides on wide screens. It is only stored when you press the menu button. It stays in localStorage until you delete it. |
| sidebarScrollTop | The scroll position of the side menu, in pixels. It is stored when you leave each page, so the menu does not jump back to the top on the next one. It is kept in sessionStorage and deleted when you close the tab. |
The AEPD guide considers interface personalisation cookies exempt from consent when the user chooses the feature, for example the language, provided they are used only for that purpose. That is why we consider preferredLanguage and sidebarClosed exempt, since they are only stored when you choose a language or open or close the menu, and are only used for that.
You do not choose sidebarScrollTop, but it only lasts while the tab is open and is only used to keep the menu's position when you move from one guide to another. We consider it technical session data needed for that navigation. None of the three is sent to a server, contains data that identify you or is used for other purposes, such as analytics or advertising.
Analytics
CrabChain.org uses Google Analytics 4, a Google service, to find out how many people visit the website, which guides are read most and how visitors reach them, in order to improve the content. Google Analytics is loaded through Google Tag Manager, a Google tool for managing the website's measurement code.
It only works if you accept it in the consent notice. According to the Google Analytics documentation, Google Analytics 4 uses these cookies, which are stored on the crabchain.org domain. The durations in the table are Google's defaults.
| Name | What it is for and how long it lasts |
|---|---|
| _ga | Telling browsers apart to count visits. Lasts 2 years. |
| _ga_9Q9BFQW27Y | Keeping the state of each visit session. Lasts 2 years. |
Google states that Google Analytics does not log or store the IP addresses of users in the European Union, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. It uses them when collecting the data to work out an approximate location, such as the country or city, and then discards them.
Advertising
CrabChain.org is funded by Google AdSense ads. To show them, each page loads the AdSense code from Google's servers. Google and, depending on your choice, other advertising providers may use cookies and similar technologies to show ads, limit how often they repeat, measure their results and prevent fraud. If you accept personalised advertising, they also use them to choose ads based on your interests, from your activity on this and other websites.
According to Google's documentation, the advertising cookies it uses include the following. The exact list depends on the AdSense settings and on your choice.
| Name | What it is for and how long it lasts |
|---|---|
| __gads | Showing ads, limiting how often they repeat and measuring results. Lasts 13 months. |
| IDE | Showing personalised ads and measuring their effectiveness. Lasts 13 months. |
Both are managed by Google. The __gads cookie is stored on the crabchain.org domain and the IDE cookie on doubleclick.net, and the duration of IDE is the one Google states for the European Economic Area. The AdSense code also stores the item google_auto_fc_cmp_setting in the website's local storage, which is likewise managed by Google. You can read about Google's cookies on its cookies page and how it uses them for advertising on its advertising technologies page.
According to Google, personalised ads are not shown without your consent. In that case you may see non-personalised ads or limited ads. Google states that, in some cases, limited ads use cookies and local storage solely to detect invalid traffic, even without consent.
Managing and withdrawing consent
The consent notice is handled by Google's consent management solution, which is set up in the «Privacy & messaging» section of AdSense. Google states that its messages for European regulations are certified under IAB Europe's Transparency and Consent Framework (TCF), which Google requires to show personalised ads in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland. It works as follows.
- If you visit the website from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, you will see a notice from Google with options to accept, reject or choose by purpose and provider.
- Google AdSense receives your choice through the TCF and applies it to the ads shown on the website.
- If you reject, you can keep reading the website as normal.
- You can change your choice or withdraw consent at any time from the privacy and cookie settings link that Google adds at the bottom of the website. Withdrawing does not affect what was done before with your consent.
- Your choice is stored in your browser so you are not asked on every visit. If you clear your browser data, the notice will appear again.
Google Analytics also depends on this notice and is not activated without your consent.
International transfers
The data collected by Google's cookies are processed by Google. According to its privacy policy, Google Ireland Limited is the entity responsible for the information of users of Google services in the European Economic Area and Switzerland, and Google may process that information on servers outside your country, including in the United States.
Google explains that Google LLC and its US subsidiaries participate in the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework and that it uses standard contractual clauses when a transfer is not covered by an adequacy decision. You can find more information on its page on data transfer frameworks, in Google's privacy policy and in our privacy policy.
How to delete or block cookies
You can delete or block the cookies and other data that CrabChain.org stores from your browser's privacy settings, in the section on cookies and site data. Common browsers, such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge and Safari, let you do this for a specific site.
If you delete or block them, the website will keep working, but it will not remember your language or the state of the side menu, and the consent notice will appear again. To manage Google's personalised advertising across all websites you can use Google's ad settings.
Your rights
The three technical preferences contain no data that identify you. Google's advertising and analytics cookies can process personal data. In that case you can exercise the rights that data protection law gives you, in the cases and within the limits it sets, such as access, rectification, erasure, objection, restriction of processing or portability.
The privacy policy explains how to exercise them. If you have any questions, you can write to crabchainorg@gmail.com. You can also lodge a complaint with the Spanish Data Protection Agency (AEPD).
Changes to this policy
This policy will be updated whenever the cookies or providers change. If a change affects what you accepted, you will be asked for consent again. The date of the last update appears at the top of the page.
